Can CBD Oil be used for Pain Relief?

CBD is the chemical compound derived from cannabis. It’s one of the many naturally occurring chemicals found in the marijuana plants.

CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) which is a cell system that plays a role in regulating sleep, mood, memory and fertility.

People can use CBD oil to manage pain, inflammation and anxiety.

    Different kinds of Pain

Our body can feel various types of pain, be it acute or chronic.

Pain can be caused by injury, internal inflammation, headaches and a host of other issues.

We can often classify pain into any of the following categories:

    Acute Pain

Acute pain is a short-term pain brought upon suddenly in direct response to a specific cause. This is often related to an injury, and with proper care and treatment of the underlying cause, will slowly subdue.

Common causes of Acute Pain include:

    • Bone injury
    • Cuts
    • Surgery and dental work

    Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is characterised by pain that lasts for more than six months, even after the underlying injury causing the pain, has healed.

Chronic pain can greatly impact the quality of your life and may cause other issues such as muscle tension, exhaustion and fatigue as you try to live on normally while managing the pain.

    Examples of Chronic Pain include:

    • Frequent headaches
    • Lower back pain
    • Arthritis

    Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is usually caused by an injury or dysfunction to your nervous system and includes reasons such as:

    • Accidents
    • Infections
    • Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease
    • Chemotherapy
    • Diabetes

This pain is often described as a burning sensation, or a shooting / stabbing pain.

CBD Oil for Acute and Chronic Pain

Studies have shown CBD Oil has pain-relieving anti-inflammatory properties which could help reduce the symptoms associated with Chronic Pain.

It is considered that CBD helps to provide a viable alternative to opioids for chronic and acute pain management. While research is still limited, CBD Oil may help provide relife against pain through its benefits including:

Fighting inflammation: much research indicates CBD can fight inflammation with limited to no side-effects

Helping to relax muscles: Chronic pain is usually characterised by muscle tension, and other injuries such as back injury, could lead to your muscles becoming tense, making the pain worse long term. CBD may help relax your muscles and provide relief against the pain long-term.

    CBD Oil for Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain can often be described as a symptom for infections, multiple sclerosis, diabetes or a cause of chemotherapy treatment.

Studies have found that CBD oil can suppress neuropathic pain.

    CBD Oil for Arthritis

Arthritis is a form of Chronic Pain and can last for months to years if not treated.

Studies have shown CBD Oil has pain-relieving anti-inflammatory properties which could help reduce the symptoms associated with Arthritis.

While there are no conclusive studies to quantify the relief against arthritis in humans, some research conducted on lab mice indicates CBD was able to prevent development of pain and nerve damage in mice affected by osteoarthritis.

    CBD Oil for Migraine

CBD Oil has not been researched as helping people to feel relief against Migraine. Most of the studies which have found relief primarily looked at CBD when paired with THC.

THC is the psychoactive substance in the cannabinoid plant which gives you the highs one would associate with marijuana. However, it is the absence of THC in CBD Oil which sets CBD apart as being a safer and legal option to obtaining the health benefits of the plant.

    How much should I take?

When beginning your journey on CBD with CBD Isolate, it is advised to begin from 3mg to 5mg daily and increasing each day while assessing your reaction is the safest way. CBD Isolate is generally safe to consume in dosages up to 1500mg per day.

You should look out for the side effects before continuing intake. If you begin to suffer from Appetite changes, Fatigue or Irritability then stop consuming, or reduce intake to understand your body’s tolerance to this supplement.
