Benefits of using Lavender Oil for your Hair

What is Lavender Oil?

Lavender oil is an essential oil made from the lavender plant. It is probably one of the most known and revered essential oils used to promote relaxation, treat anxiety, depression, insomnia and skin conditions.

Benefits of Lavender Oil for Hair

Can help promote hair growth

Hair loss has many causes such as increased stress, nutritional deficiency and genetics. Other causes could be auto-immune related responses such as alopecia, or aging.

A study applied on mice found the application of lavender oil could help stimulate hair growth; at a thicker and faster rate than before [source].

Lavender oil is known to be effective in helping recovering fatigue, stress, reproduction of skin cells and relaxation of nerves, the combined effect of which could have benefits in helping to re-grow hair.

Help reduce inflammation

Lavender oil is said to be effective at remedying skin inflammation and flare ups [source].

As Hair loss or dandruff can be triggered by inflammation of the scalp (dermatitis, psoriasis or Folliculitis), lavender oil may help curb the effect of the underlying condition and provide relief against hair loss or itchy scalp.

May help kill hair lice

It was found in a 2011 study that Lavender Oil, when combined with the tea-tree essential oil – could prevent or maybe kill head lice [source].

Lice are tiny parasites which live on your scalp, feeding off the blood. While Lavender oil and tea tree were found beneficial in eradicating lice from the scalp, they should be used in addition to any other medical treatment advised.

How to use it

The best and most simple way to obtain the benefits of Lavender Oil for hair health, is by massaging the oil directly into your scalp.

As Lavender Oil is an essential oil, it could irritate your skin and cause allergic reactions (essential oils are strong, concentrated directly from the plant). So use it with a carrier oil like coconut oil.

We recommend applying it into your hair half hour before having a shower. For optimal results, apply in your hair and leave in overnight for the oil to really absorb into your scalp.

There is no reason to not use Lavender Oil for your hair health (unless you are allergic to this oil). Its calming scent and hair growth benefits could help your overall hair appearance and feel.
