Coconut Oil Beauty Hacks

Coconut oil is an essential when it comes to looking after your skin, hair and body. It is known for its hair growth benefits, as well as its hydration and moisturising effects, however there is an ongoing list of benefits that coconut oil has for the skin and body.

As it is a natural product, coconut oil holds many properties that are good for our bodies. From relieving dry skin and helping with skin conditions such as eczema, to keeping your hair healthy and long.

But did you know coconut oil can be used for many other uses to help improve your skin, body and hair?

    Natural moisturiser

This is one of the more obvious benefits of coconut oil as it holds so many properties that are beneficial for the skin. As coconut oil contains fatty acids and properties that are great in keeping the skin smooth, hydrated and soft, it also is great if you suffer from any skin issues such as eczema.

As coconut oil is an anti-inflammatory, it is great for soothing the skin and can reduce redness, itchiness and dryness. Coconut oil is known to penetrate the skin quickly and can help to repair and refresh the skin (source).

I have been using coconut oil as a body moisturiser for quite some time now, and is something I will always stand by. As I suffer from sensitive, dry skin, this has been the best oil I have used to keep my skin feeling smooth and soft, as well as keeping it hydrated and moisturised.

From my own experience, I found that coconut oil provides quick results as you should be able to see an improvement from the first use. However, when you continue to regularly use coconut oil on your body, you will start to see other benefits such as a reduction is stretch marks and any red or dark blemishes you may have anywhere on your body.

    Lip balm

A lot of people suffer from dry lips, and in some cases, they may appear cracked, usually in the winter season. Although you can buy lip balms to help this, I found the most effective thing to use is coconut oil. Not only is it natural and pure, but it is known to trap moisture in the skin, hence will keep your lips moisturised for long time periods.

Coconut oil itself is quite runny, hence can be easily applied to the lip. Place a small amount on the tip of your finger and dab on to your lips. You can use as much as you feel is needed and can be topped up as many times as you like. However, I find that a little bit goes a long way. Not only will this prevent your lips from chapping, but will also add a natural glisten to your lips as well as softening them.

    Eye cream

Usually, when we use eye cream, it is to add moisture and soften the undereye area, as well as reduce any fine lines or wrinkles we may have. As coconut oil is known for its hydration and moisturisation, it can work effectively as an eye cream/oil.

From the first use, you will notice how it soothes your skin and makes it feel softer. Due to its collagen building properties, coconut oil can reduce and prevent any fine lines and wrinkles that you may have in that area (source).

It is important to use a small amount of oil, and apply it to the undereye area with your ring finger to ensure you don’t apply too much pressure as this is a sensitive area on your face. It is best to apply at night as the residue will remain on your face and can sink in to your skin for greater effect.

    Natural makeup remover

Using makeup wipes and makeup removals can be harsh on the skin due to their fragrances and chemical preservatives, which if used regularly, can make your skin react negatively. If you suffer from sensitive skin, you may experience redness and irritation from using such products. This can be a struggle if you wear makeup frequently, but did you know you can use coconut oil as a natural cleanser to wash away your makeup? (source

As coconut oil holds antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it is a great natural alternative to remove your makeup and cleanse your face. All you need to do is apply the oil to the palms of your hands and rub on to your skin. Be gentle around the eye area if you are wearing eye makeup and rinse with warm water. Not only will this remove your makeup easily, but will also leave your skin feeling soft and hydrated (source).

    Nail growth

Coconut oil can be used on the nails to help grow and strengthen them. If your nails are weak and break easily, coconut oil is a great way to help strengthen them. Due to its fatty acids and moisturising properties, coconut oil helps prevent your nails from cracking. As this will make your nails healthier over time, they may also grow at a quicker pace (source).

As well as benefitting the nail itself, coconut oil is also great for the cuticles. Sometimes our cuticles begin to peel back, which can be impacted by excessive handwashing, cold weather and dry skin. When this begins to happen, you can apply some coconut oil to the cuticles to moisturise them and re-strengthen them.

For best application, use a small amount of coconut oil as rub on to the nail and cuticles, ensuring you apply it all over the nail. Doing this regularly will fasten the process and you will be able to notice a difference over time.

Coconut oil has an ongoing list of benefits for the skin and body due to its beneficial properties. It is an essential product to have as part of your skincare routine as it is a natural product, hence it is rare to suffer from any reactions or side effects to it.

Coconut oil is a great way to keep your skin looking young, glowing and soft as it locks in moisture as well as giving you a natural dewy look.

No matter which beauty hack you decide to try out, make sure to keep using coconut oil regularly to see the long term effects as you’ll notice a big difference in your skin!
