What are the Top Benefits of Turmeric for your Skin

    Turmeric is a spice that comes from the turmeric plant. Commonly used in Indian food, it is known for its exceptional health benefits. 

    As turmeric holds medicinal properties, as well as containing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it can be used as a home remedy when battling certain health issues. 

    However, did you know turmeric can also be used to help better your skin? 


    Due to its antioxidant properties, turmeric can be used as an exfoliant. Not only does it improve the texture of the skin, leaving it soft and smooth, but it also slows down cell damage. 

    If you suffer from acne or your skin is prone to breakouts, turmeric is a great natural ingredient to help fight this. 

    You can make your own exfoliating scrub by mixing half a cup of flour, 2 tbsp of turmeric, 2 tbsp of honey, a tbsp of sugar and a splash of milk together until a thick paste is created. The honey and sugar will help the paste to exfoliate the skin gently. 

    Using your hands, rub the scrub onto your face in a circular motion. This will remove dead cells from your skin, which is particularly beneficial if your skin texture is quite dry and rough. 

    Doing this once or twice a week will give you the best results.

    Turmeric can reduce Scarring and Blemishes 

    Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is especially good for reducing acne scarring and blemishes. Turmeric targets the pores, clearing them from any excess oils or dirt. 

    If you suffer from hyperpigmentation, turmeric is a proven ingredient that can help reduce this. Studies show that turmeric can reduce dark spots and blemishes up to 14% after four weeks of use (source). 

    Turmeric is very calming and soothing for the skin, which is especially good for individuals who suffer from acne and acne-scarring. Not only does it target blemishes, but is also known to even out the skin tone overall. 

    A simple way to incorporate turmeric into your skincare routine is by using a turmeric face mask. 

    This is easy to make as all you need to do is mix turmeric, apple cider vinegar, yoghurt and honey together to form a smooth paste. 

    Apply evenly to your face and leave on for 15 – 20 minutes before rinsing off. You should see quick results as honey and apple cider vinegar are also beneficial natural ingredients that can be used to benefit the skin. 

    Turmeric helps Keeps your Skin Glowing 

    Have you ever found your skin looking tired and dull? This is common for individuals who suffer from dry skin and is usually caused by a build up of dead skin cells. However, using turmeric can help revive the skin by removing these dead skin cells and give you a glowing, refreshed look. Due to its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric provides a natural glow to the skin.

    To keep the skin nourished and glowing, mix together turmeric, honey, yoghurt, and a small amount of lemon to form a smooth paste. Not only will the turmeric keep the skin healthy, but the honey and lemon will also add to the moisture and nourishment. Hence, by combining these ingredients together will show best results. 

    Reduces Dark Circles around your Eyes

    As turmeric can add a natural glow to your skin, it is also very beneficial for dark undereye circles. As it brightens the skin, for people who suffer from dark circles and puffiness, turmeric is a great way to reduce this. 

    Curcumin is a major property within turmeric, which is a chemical that is known to help battle inflammation and swelling, as well as other anti-inflammatory properties, hence it works well to reduce puffiness under the eyes which can be quite common, especially in the mornings. 

    You can make your own eye cream by mixing a small amount of yoghurt and milk together, with turmeric and lemon juice. If the paste is too thick, slowly add more milk into the mixture to make it creamier. 


    Due to its strong antioxidant properties, turmeric is great for anti-ageing as it protects the skin cells from damage and stimulates new cell growth (source).  Not only does it hydrate and moisturise the skin, giving it a youthful glow, but turmeric also helps reduce wrinkles and softens the skin. 

    For anti-ageing purposes, it is best to use a facemask including turmeric, gram flour, honey and milk. This is because the gram flour, honey and milk help preserve moisture that the turmeric may strip. 

    Mix these ingredients together until a thick paste is formed, apply to the skin and leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing. Doing this twice a week will show quick results. 

    Side Effects 

    Although turmeric had multiple skin benefits, it can be a very messy ingredient to use and incorporate in to your skincare routine. Turmeric isn’t known to have many side effects, unless you’re allergic to it, however its major con is that it very easily staining. Due to its strong yellow pigmentation, it can leave yellow staining on your skin and clothes. Nevertheless, ingredients such as gram flour, milk and honey are all key to prevent staining. 


    Overall, turmeric is an essential natural ingredient that should be used as part of your skincare and is suitable for all skin types and textures as it battles various issues.

    Before using, ensure to do a patch test to avoid the risk of an allergic reaction. You can do this by applying a small amount of turmeric on your arm or behind the ear. Ensure to rub it into the skin; it is best to do this 48 hours before you use it on a larger scale. It is also recommended to wear clothing that you don’t mind getting messy as turmeric can be quite a messy ingredient to use.
